Major Geothermal – Wheatridge, Colorado
"Major Geothermal began specifying Slim Jim heat exchangers after experimenting with a small bank of 4 ton plates in a buried cistern for a mountain home in the north central Rockies of Colorado. We have been impressed with their performance for cold climate, severe heating dominated projects. For the 12,000 sq. ft. residence pictured here near Aspen, Colorado, there are 80 tons of Slim Jim capacity driving a battery of water/water heat pumps to provide radiant floor heat, forced air cooling and forced air heating using hydronic fan coils, over 5,000 sq. ft. of snowmelt, and all of the domestic hot water for the residence. Using the Slim Jims in a pond relieved the issues concerning severe duration heating loads associated with the snowmelt, where a closed vertical or horizontal loop would have required greater capacity to maintain warmer minimum entering water temperatures to the Econar heat pumps. We will continue to specify Slim Jim plates in our system designs whenever we can access a body of water for a heat exchanger."
"With a job as large as this one (50 tons) and the limited area to work in, the Slim Jim plates were perfect for this application. The man hours saved by using the Slim Jim with its compact design was astonishing. Had we used a pipe loop design, it would have been cost prohibitive, but with its compact design and easy hook-up made this job possible. I will never go back to the old pipe loop design again.
